Now she’s home and out of the Army for good and someone is trying to kill her in her own backyard. Just as disturbing is the handsome sheriff who’s on the case. Sheriff Sean Harding doesn’t quite know what to think of the decorated veteran that managed to outsmart an entire search party. What bothers him more is the body of a PI, whom she hired, was found dead in a building she owns. And Kory isn’t being very cooperative with helping him find the answers as to why someone would kill her sister and want her dead. Will he be able to keep her alive along enough to discover the truth?

~*~*~

Review

In Kill Shot, combat medic Kory Wagner has to battle a war on her own front lawn after she leaves the army permanently and has to fit herself back into civilian life. She’s faced with a mystery: what really happened to her sister? Was she killed in a hit and run the way the police report read? Or was she in fact murdered?

Kory’s need to find the truth and her own stubborn opinion that she can handle anything life throws at her after surviving four tours of war places her front and center in danger. The story opens with Kory arriving at a meeting with the PI she hired to find out the truth about her sister’s death. Instead of information, Kory is faced with more questions. The PI is found fatally wounded and he only confirms her suspicions that her sister’s death was not an accident before he dies. Kory is also shot at by someone who has marksman skill and she manages to escape.

This incident brings Kory to the attention of the local sheriff who also wants the truth but he also believes that since Kory is a civilian she should be treated as one and kept out of harms way. As the story progresses Kory and Sean butt heads over numerous issues, most prominently their own growing attraction to each other and how to deal with those feelings.

I quite enjoyed the pacing of this novel. The excitement and tension built and while the clues were dribbled out you were never sure who the actual killer was until the end. The focus was always the murder of Kory’s sister and the mystery surrounding her death plus the added tension of numerous attempts on Kory’s life instead of a straight up romance and that worked well for the subject manner. As a war veteran who has seen too much it wouldn’t be believable for Kory to plunge into a romantic relationship. She and Sean’s relationship built over time as they had to depend on each other and accept that their role previously would not always be their role currently. Kory needed to realize that people who cared about her would keep her safe while Sean needed to understand that Kory would never be the damsel in distress.

4 out of 5 stars

The handset dug into her jaw as Lucie listened to Davis pleading on the other end.

“I just don’t know if I can give you want you need right now,” Lucie whispered.

“Luce, please. “Just take a chance. We can do this, together.” He paused. “I’m scared too.”

“Davis…I love you, I do but…”

Lucie leaned back against the wall, fingers tapping on the concrete. Her feelings warred with her fears of exposing her inner self to anyone.

“Do you trust me?” He said. It all came down to that.

“Yes,” she said. “No umbrellas, no sunglasses, just hell and hallelujah everyday.”

She smiled at the laughter on the other end.

I am multi-tasking (cut me some slack, I’m going on vacation in 2 days!) so this little snippet is for Master Class, Friday Fictioneers AND 100 Word Song. I blew the 100 word limit by 11. It’s my first offense so I hope Leeroy will forgive me.

Master Class prompt was provided by moi: “No umbrellas, no sunglasses, just hell and hallelujah everyday.” It’s a line from the song by Incubus If Not Now, When. The song is all about taking chances without a safety net.

Friday Fictioneers is using the photo of the phone above.

And Leeroy chose the indie song Whale by Yellow Ostrich. I thought it worked with this piece so I’m linking up!

~*~*~

Review

Angela DeLuca loves her job and loves feeling as if she’s made a difference. So when a baby is abandoned on her door step during one of the coldest nights of the year she takes steps to make sure this baby is cared for and doesn’t follow the proper protocol. Protocol that she, as a paramedic, is more than aware of. This action introduces us to a no nonsense woman who always does the right thing, even if it’s wrong.

With the discovery of the baby Angela is pulled into the seedy underworld of human trafficking as Angela tries to determine who the baby’s mother is after a suspicious event one evening shortly after finding him (can’t reveal what it is, it’s a spoiler )

Besides Angela, Troy Devers is investigating the possible human trafficking ring running in the city. As an agent for ICE, following protocol is paramount. He doesn’t think there are victims, only people willingly trying to skirt the law. Angela and Troy disagree on how the people being brought in illegally should be dealt with but they agree that the physical attraction to each other is undeniable.

I really enjoyed the weaving of the romantic plot line with the suspenseful thriller side. It made for a tension filled read. The clues as to who was behind this activity were dribbled but it was never clear until the end which made for a page turning experience.

I’ll definitely read more from this author.

3.5 out of 5 stars.

I write, basically, because I just can’t help myself. I can’t resist the challenge of taking the intriguing characters and storylines that pop into my head and fleshing them out into compelling manuscripts. Romantic suspense is a natural to me, because it allows me to combine a sexy, passionate love story with a gritty suspense tale—in my opinion, the best of both worlds. It also lets me express my appreciation for the outdoors in the settings which I recreate on the page.

Freefall, my second novel, takes place in Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine Forest and beautiful Door County. ICE blue returns to the busy streets of Chicago and the shores of Lake Michigan to continue the story of the DeLuca family which began in my award winning first novel, heartbeats. I am currently working on the third book in the DeLuca series, TRUE blue, due out in 2014, where it seems my characters must take a trip to Montana’s majestic Glacier National Park.

When I’m not sketching characters or working out plot problems, you might find me on the golf course working on my handicap. I also enjoy traveling around the country seeking out new settings for my novels with my husband and my empty nest puppies, Ginger and Nikute. To read more about my novels and the writing life, please visit my website/blog at www.susanrae.com

Read on to see why Gabrielle’s Mom suddenly showed up last week! If you missed any you can catch up here.

For my co-author Kir’s piece on Bree (you don’t want to miss this week!) click here

With a fake smile she was intimately familiar with, Gabrielle’s mother pushed past her into the apartment, dropping her purse and carry on bag to the floor.

“What, can’t a mother come see her child?”

Arms crossed, Gabrielle glared at her mother. “Sure, if the mother even knows the child’s address. How did you know where I was living Mom?”

She scanned her mother’s face. Audrey Waters was the epitome of calm, cool and collected. She smoothed long tapered fingers across nonexistent creases and gave Gabrielle a look before answering.

“I should be angry with you, Gabby dear. You just up and disappeared, right when I needed you the most!”

Gritting her teeth Gabrielle said, “Stop deflecting, Mom. You know why I left.” She let out a deep sigh and laid a hand along her mother’s arm. “I’m sorry I haven’t kept in touch. You didn’t deserve that. However,” she tightened the grip, forestalling her mother’s inevitable comeback, “that still doesn’t explain how you got this address.”

Audrey huffed, “Fine! I might have hacked your father’s email and I might have seen that email from you talking about how you saved up enough to purchase your own place.”

Gabrielle gasped. “Mother! You hacked an email account? Where did you learn something like that?”

With a wave of dismissal, Audrey turned and wandered into the small, yet cozy living room and sat gingerly on the edge of the couch. “It’s not difficult. Your father really should be more original with his passwords.”

“God help me,” Gabrielle murmured to herself. She caught sight of the clock on the wall and groaned. Steven would be here any moment. She really didn’t want to explain the presence of her mother, especially since she didn’t know why she’d suddenly turned up on her doorstep.

And since her mother didn’t know she was engaged.

Gabrielle flipped her ring around, palming the diamond. “Mom, does Ray know you’re here?”

Audrey sniffed at the mention of her current husband and large tears pooled along her lashes before spilling down her cheeks. Gabrielle realized her mother had been crying a lot as the façade broke. She sat next to her mother and grasped a hand in hers.

“Spill.”

Taking a shuddering breath Audrey got right to the point. “Ray and I are getting a divorce.”

“Oh Mom, what happened? I thought this one might stick, Ray was besotted with you.” Gabrielle felt a familiar tightening in her gut as memories of her childhood came rushing back. Her parents constant fighting made a tense environment. Married too young, Audrey and Jonathan Waters thought their idealized high school love could see them through anything. Gabrielle’s arrival and the resulting strains on their relationship due to a tough economy proved otherwise.

“Perhaps he was, once. But we drifted apart and all I was getting out of it was a new expensive outfit.” She held out her arms, scrutinizing the Chanel blazer and sighed. “New clothes do not make the heart sing. I was so lonely, Gabby, so desperate for affection…”

Gabrielle sucked in a breath. “Oh, Mom. You didn’t!” At her mother’s nod she continued. “Who?”

Audrey opened her mouth to answer only to be interrupted by the front door swinging open, Steven calling out, “Gabrielle? Are you alright? Why is the door open?”

Damn, I forgot to shut the door. Standing she moved over to Steven, shielding her mother from view. She hooked her hand on his elbow and tried to guide him back out.

“Can you wait in the hall? I had an unexpected visitor I need to get settled.”

Steven glanced over her shoulder, craning his neck to see. “Who is it? An aunt?”

“Uhm, no. Not exactly.” She turned her head and called to Audrey. “Be right back!” then hustled Steven out of the apartment.

“Gabrielle, what’s going on?” He glanced at his watch. “We’re going to be late.”

“I’m really sorry, sweetie, but I need to duck out of dinner. I need to deal with this.”

“What, exactly, it this?” He gestured towards the closed door. Gabrielle took a deep breath.

“The woman in there isn’t my aunt, she’s my mother.” She grimaced at the shocked look on Steven’s face. Please, let him play along and just go. I really don’t want to have them meet now. “She showed up out of the blue and…she doesn’t know I’m engaged.”

The sunset struck so brilliantly into the travelling carriage when it gained the hilltop, that its occupants were steeped in crimson. Seraphina shuddered at the sight, reminded of that man who’d chased her through Hyde Park, his face a bloody mess after she’d evaded him once and he’d slammed into the stone rail of a bridge. It hadn’t slowed him, demonstrated by the fact she was here, in this carriage, travelling heaven knew where.

A gut-wrenching sob clawed its way up her throat but she clenched her teeth and swallowed it back down. She spent enough time crying, enough time begging. No one would answer her questions. She turned her eyes away from the figure seated across from her, his thick meaty hands crossed daintily upon his lap. He’d been nothing but a perfect gentleman however…it was his eyes that gave her pause. Their hollow, dead look made her uneasy.

The scenery was pleasant at least. Lush green fields alternated with animated hedgerows. More than once a tiny bird fluttered into the open window of the carriage to trill a song. Seraphina took it as a sign that everything would turn out okay in the end.

A grunt drew her gaze away from the herd of fluffy white sheep clustered on a ridge like a dollop of cream. The man flexed his hands, knuckles popping. Seraphina swallowed the sudden lump in her throat and pushed her body as far away from as possible. His bushy eyebrows, like caterpillars wiggling along his brow, twitched. He reached across his body. Was he going for a knife, was this the end? A squeak escaped her lips.

“Are ye ’ungry, love?” He extended a hand, offering her a small loaf of bread and a chunk of cheese. She met his eyes and felt a flush of embarrassment coat her cheeks. His eyes twinkled with suppressed amusement. Trembling, she grasped the food and placed it on her lap.

“Th-thank you.”

“S’aw right. I know I’m a scary feller. S’reason I get sent on these trips.” His lips peeled apart in a wide jack-o-lantern grin revealing missing teeth. Seraphina offered him a weak one of her own then busied herself with eating the bread and cheese. Her stomach let out a rumble. She’d forgotten how long it had been since she’d eaten anything substantial.

Thoughts of the children, Mary and Sam, and her employers filled her mind. Were they worried? Did they know she was gone? She’d been enjoying her monthly free day when the events occurred. How much time had passed from when she received that letter instructing her to present herself at the Magical Magistrate and the knock on her door? The knock that led to that horrific chase through the streets of London and into Hyde Park. The knock that resulted in her being grabbed and thrown bodily into this carriage?

“Where are we going? I don’t recognize the area.”

He gave her a small smile but shook his head. “S’rry love. Can’t tell ya. Mistress would have me head.”

She nodded sadly and continued eating her meager dinner.

The carriage continued on for indeterminate amount of time. Seraphina cursed her lack of a watch. Her companion remained silent, leaving her to stare out the window. As the light faded, she began to see inklings of a city in the distance. Perhaps their destination was within reach.

Giving in to the exhaustion that had plagued her all day, Seraphina rested her head on the side of the carriage and succumbed to an uneasy sleep.

***

When she woke, she found herself curled up on the bench, a thick travelling robe draped over her body and a small cushion under her head. As she stretched she saw her companion seated in exactly the same position as he had been before she fell asleep. Before she could speak the carriage jerked to a sudden stop.

“We’re here. Come now, can’t keep the Mistress waitin’”

I chose to add a little back story to my character Seraphina. Regular readers will recognize her as the sassy reflection in Rachel’s magic mirror. This is her journey to see Mistress, the woman who will dole out her punishment for doing an illegal act of magic. Want more?
The track quickly led to the river and I dropped my stuff near the edge. Kneeling, I dunked my top in the water and scrubbed it full of soap, smiling when I heard splashes further out in the water. Audi’s such a water baby and as long as it’s by choice rather than me giving her a bath she’ll swim anywhere. I swished the top under the water, rinsing the soap out. The splashes got closer and I glanced up.

Alek stood in the middle of the river, the water lapping mid thigh on him.

I froze, heart thudding loudly in my ears as I stared.

The water cascaded down his taut muscular body, his blue black hair shoved back out of his eyes and his white essentially see-through undergarment. My jaw dropped; I don’t think I’d ever seen such a fantastic specimen in real life before.

Alek stared at Catherine in surprise; he’d thought all the women would have slept for a few more hours at least. About to call out a greeting, he stopped when he noticed her slack jawed expression.

Suddenly I could make out the rational voice in my head, it shrieked at me; STOP STARING! HE’S LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU!

My eyes jerked up to dark blue ones that regarding me in amusement, an eyebrow arched.

OH MY GOD.

And in the manner of any intelligent, attractive, level headed female who’s been caught out… I promptly blushed beetroot, muttered something unintelligent and snatched my things before bolting for the tent. I hurtled past Daron heading toward the river.

Alek stared after Catherine. She’d turned a rather remarkable shade of red then run off. Not far off the color of her hair, Alek mused in amusement. She obviously approved of what she’d seen; he chuckled at the recollection of shock in those wide green eyes when she realized he watched.

‘Alek! What’d you do to Catherine?’ Daron appeared at the end of the track, a concerned expression on his face.

Alek smirked.

Uh oh, thought Daron, I know that look. He stopped in the track and gave Alek a look of his own. ‘Explain. Now.’

Alek arched an eyebrow at Daron’s tone. ‘I did nothing to her,’ he struggled to keep a straight face. ‘She didn’t notice me swimming here and seemed a bit,’ he paused and shot Daron a crooked grin. ‘…surprised to find me.’

Daron envisioned the scene and gave a snort of amusement. ‘You do know your shorts are see-through when wet, Alek.’

‘You know, I think Catherine noticed that.’ Alek smirked then shrugged. ‘I thought they’d sleep for a few more hours. Didn’t think I’d need to worry about company.’

Be careful what you wish for…
A seemingly innocuous love spell caused Catherine, Sian, Laura, and Kassandra to cross worlds in search of their soul mates. But more than love drew them to Gar’nyse. Truths are revealed and lives forever altered after an attack at the castle. An age old feud between two archaic families threatens to tear the world they’ve arrived in apart. As the ultimate weapons in such a war the four girls are the only hope for peace.
But one of them lies unconscious from the attack, and the destiny that awaits her when she wakes will change everything.

~*~*~

Excerpt

Sian tipped her head up to press a kiss to Daron’s jaw then scooted off the bed and went to look out the windows.

Outside the forest darkened as the sun dropped, and the sounds of the animals changed. The day dwellers were going to sleep, and the night dwellers began to venture out. The sense of awe at such a sight struck her again. The window misted with her breath when she pressed her forehead against it, looking up.

‘Daron, what’s that?’
Daron glanced up to see her pressed against the window, staring in fascination at something. Marking a place in the book, he climbed off the bed and joined her at the window. Flickering lights had begun to appear in the air, and clusters of nightbloom were opening as twilight turned to dusk. The glow of the delicate flowers was a soft gold in the dark and made him smile as he remembered trying to pick one for his mother.

‘Those are nightbloom, Pix. They only open at night and are very delicate. You can’t pick them,’ he said wryly and she smiled.

‘Tried?’

Daron nodded and opened the door to the balcony, gesturing for her to go out. Shutting the door behind them, he wrapped his arms around her as they gazed out.

‘I really wanted to pick one for my mother when I was eight. My sister told me it wasn’t possible, but I didn’t believe her.’ His older sister always knew the best, one way or another and even now, still loved to boss him and his younger brother around.

‘She was right, as always. As soon as you touch a nightbloom they wither. Just those firefae can feed from them.’

‘Firefae? Like Cat’s fire?’ Sian watched as one flitted close.

‘No, they don’t burn. They just glow. During their mating season they turn pink.’
One rested on the handrail. Sian watched as Daron coaxed it onto his hand.

‘Have a look, Pix.’

She gently cupped his hands and bent to stare at the little creature. The tiny firefae watched her with large dark eyes. It glowed, a lovely orange shade, and the energy it used hummed through Daron’s hand and hers.

‘It’s beautiful.’

It was kind of like the pictures of fairies she’d seen on Earth. A human-like shape but you couldn’t tell its sex. Its tiny body was covered with fine, hair-like filaments, so it almost looked fuzzy. The wings that it flitted around with were shaped like a fan, the edges almost ragged, floating softly in the night air. Its large eyes were surrounded with beautiful long lashes, making the little creature look adorable. A second firefae landed next to it, and Sian quietly gasped. This one had hair, or what looked like it, that surrounded its head in a golden mane.

‘That’s a male,’ Daron breathed the words as the two fae seemed to dance on his hand.

‘How can you tell?’

‘The gold mane.’

She watched the two interact together, marveling at their tiny hands and feet. Each digit had a slightly bulbous end, reminding her of frogs’ feet. The fae wandered about Daron’s hand for a bit longer, then pushed off, their delicate wings fluttering as they flew away to the nearest nightbloom.

They spent nearly an hour out there, watching as the forest turned to inky blackness. There were quite a few plants and creatures that were luminescent. It made the dark beautiful and eerie, reminding Sian of footage she’d seen of deep undersea dives. When they retired to bed, she snuggled up to Daron as he gently stroked her back.

‘Pleased to be here?’

‘I am. It’s really lovely,’ she yawned. ‘I’ll have to give Gredel a big hug for this.’

The battle to save Gar’nyse is upon them and already the costs are insurmountable.
With no other option but to knowingly sail into a trap, the girls, the Griffon Guard, and the gathered forces set forth to reach the castle and destroy Jenviet. However the loss of Alek means the task sits fully on the four girls’ shoulders and with only one of them at their full Elemental abilities, the risk of death, or worse—failure—is high. Now with nothing to lose, Catherine refuses to link with the other girls, hoping that she alone will be able to take Jenviet. But the malevolent Sorceress of Vo’Arum has other plans…

Excerpt

I slowed, stopping when I sighted Loi. She stood in the middle of a large cave, larger than the previous one we’d stayed in, and tiny lighted things fluttered around her.

‘Loi, what are those?’ I called in a quiet voice, not wanting to disturb them. Leynorah squealed and she and her mother leaped off my shoulders, flying straight for Loi and the lights. My jaw dropped when the two fae tackled one of the glowing things to the cave floor, gobbling it down and then lifted their heads to utter sharp whistles. Poor Loi looked horrified when answering whistles echoed from further down the corridor and more Halenine fae came whooping through, flashing past my head into the cave.

In a short matter of time the Halenine fae devoured the glowing things, buzzing excitedly around Loi, congratulating her on the find, oblivious to her appalled expression while she stared at the glowing remnants scattered about the floor. Those behind me pushed past into the cave, looking around, and the Cavalry and General guard soldiers started to set the camp up. It felt strange to realize that the whole day had gone, the lack of light messing with my body clock. Loi stared at the glowing remains of the fluttery things and I made my way to her.

‘Errmmm…sorry about that.’

Leynorah sat perched on a rock, fiendishly waving some bits of glowing wings in either front hand, singing a little ditty of ‘Yummy! Yummy, yummy, YUMMY!’

Loi sighed. ‘S’okay. Guess they have to eat.’

About the Author

Nicole MacDonald is a thirty something year old Kiwi who loves to read and moonlights as a novelist. From a young age she fantasized about being the heroine in the books and/or movies she watched and credits the series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ for really inspiring her. Writing only occurred to her a few years ago after reading an abysmal tale with silly useless females where upon she decided to write a tale solely for herself where the girls got to kick butt without the usual sob story—betrayed/abused/abandoned etc. That little tale eventuated into the BirthRight Trilogy.

Nicole’s current daydream is that Joss Whedon (aka the genius of film) will discover the BirthRight Trilogy and demand the film rights to it. Until then, she’s working on several other writing projects and aiming to explore the world with her partner.

“This is ridiculous!” Simi practically hissed the words at me as she scanned the path nearby. I rolled my eyes at her drama.

“You just don’t want to explain to Marcus Thaler why you’re crouching in the weeds next to his house,” I snapped. Simi flushed . I knew I hit the mark.

“You are crazy.” Each word was deliberate, like a finger poke into my chest.

“Maybe.” I shrugged. “Now hush and watch.”

I turned my attention back to the fence and its oddly curved path. Simi shifted impatiently.

“Addy-“ Her whine was cut short by the fairy-sized train chugging along the top of the fence.

“Told ya.”

There was an election in BC yesterday. Once again, the voters put the Liberals in power and the New Democratic Party has official opposition. Considering the NDP went into this election with everyone predicting a landslide victory tells you something about the voters in this province.

I’m not big on politics. I don’t really pay attention to each party, what they say, what they do. I vote each time I have the opportunity because if you don’t vote, you can’t bitch later.

BUT even with my limited understanding and huge apathy even I could tell you NO ONE is going to vote for a party that has an outright criminal as their leader.

Adrian Dix falsified documents when he was in the premier’s office. He ended up being fired for it. You can spin it all you want but the man out and out lied to the police to cover for his boss. That is just too much for any sane person to swallow. And it doesn’t help when the other party consistently brings it up

If the NDP had voted in Mike Farnworth as their leader when they held their convention I think we’d be seeing a much different political picture. Farnworth is a politician with *gasp* no obvious skeletons. He is beloved in his riding demonstrated by him consistently being re-elected by HUGE margins. Even I would have voted for the NDP candidate in my riding had he been the leader.

And let’s not forget Christy Clark, the leader of the Liberals, didn’t even WIN her own seat in this election. She’s an opportunist pure and simple. She skuttles out of politics when it gets a little heated (BC Rail scandal) and slides back in when Gordon Campbell completely destroys all he built up with the party with the HST stupidity.

Pay attention: NDP – ditch Dix as leader. He is NEVER going to win you a government.

Liberals – ditch Clark. Don’t go through the farce of a by-election and kicking out some poor person who WON his/her spot by the choice of the people in that riding. You are just going to make more people pissed at you.

If nothing else, BC politics should be entertaining for the next few months.
