After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough.
Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) has been waiting since she was sixteen for the perfect man, a man she saw on screen in a movie. She fell in love with Mr. Darcy and decides that someday she will have a relationship with a man exactly like him.
Fast forward six years and Elizabeth is working as a bank teller instead of in interior design like her degree says and holding back from falling in love until Mr. Darcy waltzes through her door. Her roommate decides to force her to date the next guy who asks a minimum of ten times before she gives him the boot. The lucky man is Chad and despite her initial misgivings, Lizzie discovers an attraction to Chad she finds difficult to resist.
Until Mr. Darcy walks into her bank.
Matt is everything Lizzie dreamed about. He looks like Mr. Darcy, he acts like Mr. Darcy, and he has the same sort of background as Mr. Darcy. He’s perfect…right? Lizzie wants to believe this and moves forward into an exclusive relationship with Matt, moving Chad into a friend role.
As Lizzie and Matt move their relationship to the next level she begins to see things that don’t make Matt so perfect. In fact, he’s an inconsiderate jerk while Chad proves to be a fabulous friend by giving her an opportunity to do a real design job. Lizzie is forced to make a decision: does she stick with her dream or does she moved forward towards something different?
I loved this story overall with the exception of Lizzie’s stubbornness when it came to her Mr. Darcy. From the very start she doubted her feelings yet she stuck with her dream through most of the book.
If you love clean romance with sweet characters and have a soft spot in your heart for Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth is my personal favorite) you will love this book.
