Ghost in town

Laura propped her chin up on the mop handle and stared aimlessly out the café’s front window. She could hear Isabelle humming as she wiped the long Formica counter. Another day done.

The sound of honking drew her eyes up to the sky. A long v-shaped formation of Canada Geese flew by, on their way to warmer climates. A shadow ghosted through her peripheral vision and she shivered.

“Isabelle? What’s the deal with Aidan?”

“He’s a strange duck, no doubt about it. Pushes folks away mostly. This is the most I’ve ever seen him in town since he moved here.”

  1. Great job “showing” and not telling. There were so many things you didn’t say, but we can still see it. And now I’m curious about Aiden.

  2. wow at your interpretation. I read an interview with teh guy who wrote the song, Rob Thomas, who said his inpsiration came from quittiing a dead end job (similar to the one in your 100) and reevaluating the relationship he was in.

you captured all of that and much more.

The opening paragraph is some of the best writing you’ve ever done. very well crafted

  3. You have to go where the inspiration takes you, right?

  4. What the Hell!?!? Is this a Canadian thing? Are you aware, that you publish the chapters of a story IN ORDER?

  5. Sigh. So. He’s probably NOT out there looking for her. Sad.

  6. I like your link between the flying geese and the duck named Aiden. (I wonder if he’ll fly south to a warmer climate too?)
